The Subcutaneous Tissue

Subcutaneous Tissue

The subcutaneous tissue is a layer of fat that lies beneath the dermis and acts as an insulator and shock absorber. These tissues also store energy in the form of calories as a reserve nutritional source.

The thickness of the subcutaneous fat varies from body area to body area. It tends to be thickest at the waist, and is practically nonexistent at the eyelids.
