OCCLUSION (ok CLUE shun):
In general, occlusion means the act of closing off. In dermatology, occlusion is a technique used to increase the penetration of a topically applied substance, such as a corticosteroid. The skin surface is covered with a film, such as Saran. This occlusion creates a greenhouse effect, which enhances the penetration of the topical corticosteroid.

OCCLUSIVE (ok CLUE siv):
Agent which increases occlusion.

OCCUPATIONAL ACNE:
Acne due to the exposure to cutting oils, tar and pitch products; found in workers as an employment exposure.

OINTMENT:
Type of dermatologic vehicle. A semisolid emulsion of water in oil. Ointments are lubricating and are often used to treat dry, scaling lesions.

ONCOLOGY (on KOL oh jee):
The branch of medicine that deals with tumors.

ONYCHOLYSIS (ON i kol y sis):
The separation of the nail plate from the nail bed, giving the nail an opaque white or yellow appearance in the involved area.

ONYCHOMYCOSIS:
Fungus infection of the nail.

OTC:
Over-the-counter medication that does not require a prescription for purchase.
